Winter Pet Safety: 5 Signs It’s Time for Emergency or Urgent Care

Boy & Dog Playing in the Snow

When temperatures drop, winter hazards rise—and knowing when to seek emergency care for your pet can save lives. From icy sidewalks to toxic antifreeze, cold-weather risks are everywhere. Here’s what every pet parent should know about winter safety and when to head to the ER or urgent care.

1. Hypothermia & Frostbite

Pets exposed to freezing temperatures can develop hypothermia or frostbite quickly. Warning signs include:

  • Shivering or trembling

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Pale, blue, or cold skin on ears, paws, or tail

If you notice these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately. Frostbite can cause lasting tissue damage if untreated.

2. Ice Melt & Antifreeze Toxicity

Salt-based ice melts and antifreeze are common winter toxins. Even small amounts can be deadly. Symptoms include:

  • Drooling

  • Vomiting

  • Loss of coordination

  • Seizures

If you suspect ingestion, do not wait—head to the ER right away.

3. Slips, Falls & Injuries

Icy surfaces can lead to sprains, fractures, or ligament injuries. Limping, swelling, or inability to bear weight should be evaluated promptly to prevent complications.

4. Breathing Difficulties

Cold air can trigger respiratory distress, especially in pets with heart or lung conditions. Signs like coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing require urgent care.

5. Holiday Hazards

Winter celebrations often bring chocolate, alcohol, and rich foods into homes. If your pet eats something toxic or shows signs of vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures, seek emergency care.

Prevention Tips:

  • Limit outdoor time in extreme cold and use pet-safe booties.

  • Wipe paws after walks to remove ice melt residue.

  • Store antifreeze and chemicals securely.

  • Keep holiday treats out of pets' reach.
